The heat is on in West Texas and the Texas Panhandle where 100-degree temperatures are forecast this week. That’s welcome news for growers ready for the sunshine after enjoying plenty of rainfall. But crusting issues following those rains have growers pondering whether replants are needed.

The Southeast is still experiencing extremely dry and hot conditions. Planting efforts have slowed and, for the most part, growers have now swapped cotton for soybeans.
N deficiencies are apparent in the Upper Gulf Coast, where deluge after deluge has kept many fields flooded. The southern Blacklands are also seeing excessive rain, as is the Coastal Bend. But cotton is resilient and can often handle more water pressure than other crops, notes Ben McKnight, College Station-based AgriLife cotton specialist.
