Virginia Cotton: Harvest Advancing Fast

Cotton harvest is in full throttle now and we are about 20% harvested. Often at peak picking time, we can get almost 25% per week with no stopping, although with a little bit of rain this week, we might miss a day or two. Nevertheless, we are experiencing the earliest good cotton crop we have ever had and there is a good chance we will have close to half the crop picked by the middle of October.

There is still some cotton that has not been defoliated and much of that will be scheduled for spraying soon. Long term forecasts are showing above normal temperatures for the rest of the month, but it is October, so that doesn’t mean its going to be exactly warm.

Still there is no cold weather in the forecast until the last week of the month and plenty of 70-degree days are showing up for a couple more weeks that would allow for successful defoliation.

I hope everyone will stay safe. We are working some long days. For you non-Ag types, we ask for your patience as we need to take our time on these back roads for safety.
