Texas LRGV Row Crops: Dryland Cotton Harvest Started

We received scattered rain shower, a few tenths to an inch this week. Heat units continue to accumulate as cotton moves toward harvest.

The cotton crop across the Valley is very clean. Many growers along the river are irrigating one last time before they make their way to harvest in the next few weeks. Others were applying their second shot of defoliant this week.

I saw dryland cotton harvesting in Willacy and Cameron Counties. Verde bugs were in soft immature bolls in the Los Fresnos area. Verde bugs can cause boll deformation and damage so its best to control them when populations are present to protect the young bolls as they mature. Whitefly populations were mostly down throughout the Valley.

Dwight Jackson with the National Cotton Council along with several of our LRGV growers – Glen Wilde, Joe Pennington, and Chris Breedlove – hosted a wonderful group of people from Indonesia. They represented the Textile Association of Indonesia and took a look at cotton around Harlingen, Sebastian, Lyford, and Raymondville.
