Own a piece of Texas? Whether it is 2 acres or 200,000 acres, landowners need to be aware of their legal responsibilities and rights.

“Owning Your Piece of Texas: Agricultural Laws Texas Landowners Need to Know” is a day-long program designed by Tiffany Dowell Lashmet, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service agricultural law specialist in Amarillo.

Lashmet has scheduled these landowner workshops throughout Texas. The program is free, but registration is required online here, or by calling 979-845-2604.

Each meeting will begin with check-in at 8:30 a.m., and the workshop will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The dates and locations are:

  • May 7, Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center, 1102 E. Farm-to-Market Road 1294, Lubbock.
  • June 7, Palo Alto College-Ozuna Library, 1400 Villaret Blvd., San Antonio.
  • June 28, AgriLife Extension-Houston County office, 716 Wells St., Crockett.
  • Aug. 26, Cat Spring Ag Hall, 13035 Hall Road, Cat Spring.
  • Sept. 12, Hildebrand Equine Complex, 3240 F&B Road, College Station.

“This information will be useful to any landowner, regardless of length of ownership, and to other professionals who work with new landowners, such as realtors, county appraisal districts and lenders,” Lashmet said.

All participants will receive a copy of the “Owning Your Piece of Texas” handbook, which outlines some of the important laws landowners need to be aware of, she said.

In addition to Lashmet, attorneys from each location will cover water rights, landowner liability, eminent domain, special-use tax valuation, fence laws, key estate planning documents and more.

Lunch will be sponsored at each location by AgWorkers Insurance. Additional funding has been provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Southern Extension Risk Management Education Center.
