Texas: Llano Estacado Cotton Conference, Muleshoe, Jan. 29

The multicounty Llano Estacado Cotton Conference will be hosted by the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service on Jan. 29 at the Bailey County Electric Cooperative, 610 East American Blvd., Muleshoe.

The AgriLife Extension offices in Bailey and Parmer counties are collaborating to address the concerns of cotton producers in this area, according to Curtis Preston, AgriLife Extension agriculture and natural resources agent Bailey County.

The program will begin with registration at 8 a.m. and conclude by 4 p.m. Five Texas Department of Agriculture continuing education units are pending.

The fee is $20, and lunch will be served.

Program topics and speakers will be:

  • Pre-plant considerations and variety trial results, Dr. Murilo Maeda, AgriLife Extension cotton specialist, Lubbock.
  • Local research updates, John David Gonzales, AgriLife Extension integrated pest management agent, Bailey, Castro and Parmer counties, and Preston.
  • Insect issues related to Bt technologies, Dr. Suhas Vyavhare, AgriLife Extension cotton entomologist, Lubbock.
  • Cover crops and soil health, Dr. Katie Lewis, AgriLife Research soil scientist, Lubbock.
  •  Disease and nematode management, Dr. Tom Isakeit, AgriLife Extension plant pathologist, College Station.
  • Resistant weed management, Dr. Peter Dotray, AgriLife Extension weed specialist, Lubbock.
  •  Cotton marketing opportunities, Dr. John Robinson, AgriLife Extension cotton marketing economist, College Station.
