Dates are set for cover crop field days in central and south Alabama.

Producers in the southeastern corner of Alabama will have an opportunity to attend a cover crop field day Friday, March 23, at the Wiregrass Research and Extension Center (WREC) and Johnson farm. Producers in central Alabama will have a similar tour Tuesday, March 27, at E.V. Smith Field Crops Unit and Lazenby Farms.

Dr. Audrey Gamble, an Alabama Cooperative Extension System soil specialist, said these workshops will be a great opportunity for producers to learn strategies to manage cover crops on their farms.

“Cover crops can provide numerous benefits in cropping systems,” Gamble said. “They help to reduce soil erosion, conserve soil moisture, and suppress weeds. Cover crops also contribute organic matter to the soil, which is important for increasing the amount of nutrients and water that a soil can hold.”
