Texas: Cotton Herbicide Rotation Restrictions to Sorghum

Due to the rise of cotton acres in the southern High Plains of Texas expected in 2017, interest is growing in the use of long residual herbicides that can affect the waiting time between planting sorghum and cotton.

Sorghum Checkoff Agronomist Brent Bean, Ph.D., provides rotation restrictions with a list of common herbicides, explaining the use of certain herbicides will lock farmers into a multi-year commitment to growing either sorghum or cotton. For example, the use of the herbicide Reflex (Flexstar) on cotton will result in a 36-month waiting period before a grower can plant sorghum.
