Peanut Stocks: Utilization Up 5%; 1.5B Pounds in Storage

Peanut stocks reported in commercial storage on September 30, 2016 totaled 1.51 billion pounds of equivalent farmer stock, compared with 1.85 billion pounds a year ago. This total includes 963 million pounds of actual farmer stock.

Shelled peanuts on hand totaled 536 million pounds of farmer stock equivalent. Roasting stock totaled 13.5 million pounds.

Shelled peanut stocks totaled 403 million pounds of which 370 million pounds were edible grades and 33.2 million pounds were oil stocks. Edible grade stocks by type included 64.5 million pounds of Virginias and Valencias, 293 million pounds of Runners, and 12.0 million pounds of Spanish.

Millings in September totaled 276 million pounds. Millings by type were 38.9 million pounds of Virginias and Valencias, 237 million pounds of Runners, and 180 thousand pounds of Spanish.

Commercial processors utilized 188 million pounds of shelled edible grade peanuts during September. Utilization by type was 104 million pounds for all peanut butter products, 39.5 million pounds for peanut candy, and 39.8 million pounds for peanut snacks. Crushing for oil and cake and meal totaled 66.6 million pounds during the month.

Deliveries under the Government Domestic Feeding and Child Nutrition Programs amounted to 2.80 million pounds of peanut butter during September.

Stocks of treated seed on hand September 30, 2016 totaled 47,000 pounds, compared with 50,000 pounds on August 31, 2016. Of the September total, 7,000 pounds were Runners. August stocks of treated seed included, 7,000 pounds of Runners.
