South Carolina: Question of the Week – Wireworm

This is a wireworm.  Wireworms are beetle larvae that live in the soil and feed on plant roots.  Larvae from a few different beetle families are sometimes called wireworms, so to clarify, this one is in the Elateridae family (click beetles).  Wireworms can be a minor pest to a number of crops.  In addition to feeding on small plant roots, they can bore into the stems and roots of larger plants.  Corn in particular can be affected, but usually our seed treatments do a pretty good job of providing protection.  For more info, take a look at this page.
