About the author:

Larry Heatherly is a recognized authority on Midsouth soybean production. In 2004, Delta Farm Press credited his research with bringing soybeans "back from the brink of extinction in the South."

He served in various agronomy research posts with USDA between 1974 and 2004 at the department’s Stoneville, Mississippi, facility.

His extensive research helped pioneer and perfect the Early Soybean Production System (ESPS), the stale seedbed production system and new approaches and refinements to crop irrigation.

Since 2004, he has worked as an agronomic consultant and agricultural writer.

In 2004, Heatherly received USDA’s Plow Award, the agency’s top recognition for excellence in agricultural research.

He now resides in East Tennessee where he is an adjunct professor in the department of plant sciences at the University of Tennessee.
