June 28, 2009 – The Texas rice crop is 37% headed, which is in line with the average percentage headed during 2001 to 2008, according to crop progress information posted on the Texas Rice Crop Survey web site. 

The highest percentage of heading was in the state’s Southwest zone, which includes 5 counties. In Matagorda County – noted for the early state that growers make on the crop there – 82% of the rice was headed.

This continues to be a hot, dry summer across much of the state’s main rice production area. Pumps can’t keep up with crop demand. Canal systems, which supply water to many growers, have not been able to keep up with demand, either. Texas rice acreage increased this year, plus a prolonged drought through much of the state has drawn down reservoirs north of Austin that supply the canal systems in the rice production areas west of Houston.

“I have heard of several farmers having to cut some acres off to save the rest of the crop,” Derrol Grymes reported in this week’s RiceTec Hybrid Rice Report.

Effects of the dry weather are being felt in parts of Louisiana, as well.

“Most fields finally got ‘some’ water, but it is difficult to maintain a flood on some acres,” consultant Roger Carter reported in this week’s AMS Ag Report, which covers east-central Louisiana. “Well-diggers and pump mechanics and salesmen are working overtime. Water tables are lowering quickly and reducing well flow. Even some lakes and bayous being used for irrigation are drying. With water issues come weed issues. Costly applications are being made where water was applied late.”
