Soybean Rust:

2 more Florida counties confirmed this week for a total of 4

Staff Report

July 23, 2008 - Asian soybean rust (ASR) has been confirmed in sentinel plots in 2 additional Florida panhandle counties this week, according to a report filed on USDA's soybean rust web site. This brings to 4 the number of panhandle counties where rust has been confirmed since the weekend.

In the latest report, ASR was found on soybean leaves collected on July 20 from sentinel plots in Columbia and Madison Counties.

Columbia County's find was in MG V plants at R4, with 2 of 104 leaves examined having 1 pustule each. This county was already positive from a find on kudzu July 8.

Madison County's find was on MG V soybeans at R4/R5, with 2 of 99 leaves with one pustule each. Madison County was negative before this find.

Both counties are north of Gainesville, with Madison on the Georgia border.

Earlier this week, ASR also was confirmed on soybean leaves collected July 15 from a MG V sentinel plot in Walton County and July 16 from a MG III sentinel plot in Jackson County. Those were the first finds in both counties for 2008. Both counties are further west in the Florida panhandle than any previous finds. At present, 16 counties in Florida are positive.

The panhandle is in a weather pattern that includes scattered afternoon thundershowers and temperatures in the mid 90s.

"Commercial soybeans are growing through their reproductive stages, which favors rust development," according to the posting on the site. "The frequent rains are enough for the rust and may make the disease more important than last year when we had the spring drought."
