Kentucky:

Shortage of Proline fungicide prompts crisis exemption for Folicur on wheat

May 1, 2008 - Kentucky wheat producers have been granted a crisis exemption to use Folicur fungicide on wheat for control of Fusarium head blight due to a lack of prothioconazole (Proline) fungicide.

This follows reports of fungicide shortages in several parts of the South during late April as growers started treating this season’s large wheat crop.

The Kentucky Department of Agriculture has issued – and EPA has ratified – the crisis exemption, according to a memo sent by Don Hershman, University of Kentucky plant pathologist.

The exemption allows the use of Folicur ag a rate of 4 fluid ounces per acre, applied at Feeke's stage 10.51 for fusarium head blight and deoxynivalenol (DON) management. The exemption is good through May 15, according to Hershman’s announcement.

Feakes 10.51 is when evidence of anthesis are visible on 50% of main tillers.

"It has been determined in the Southern Western Counties of the state running along the Tennessee Stateline that wheat is (at) Feekes 10.51," according to a memo sent Wednesday to EPA officials by Patrick Gilbert, Kentucky Department of Agriculture Director of Environmental Services Division, Pesticides.
