Corn earworm (a.k.a. bollworm) are showing up in soybeans at treatment-level numbers in some areas, ranging from 40 to 100 larvae per 100 sweeps. There are several reports from the Shelby and Tipton County areas, but be aware elsewhere because the moth flight is increasing and expanding to other areas.
High numbers of larvae can damage nearly every pod in a field if left untreated.
UT’s recommended treatment threshold is 36 larvae per 100 sweeps. Infestations are far more likely in late planted flowering soybeans ranging from R1 – R4, particularly in fields with an open canopy.
It is the blooms which will attract moths to the field.
Here are the UT recommended insecticide options, but the usual choice is a mid-rate synthetic pyrethroid.
Fall armyworms infestations in Bermudagrass pastures (and even lawns) are severe in many areas, and other pasture grasses can be affected.
UT recommends treatment when populations reach 3-4 larvae per square foot, or fields can be cut if close to harvest.
