Louisiana Farmers Wrapping Up Corn, Make Headway In Rice And Moving To Beans And Cotton

For Week Ending 4/11/2010

 

Days suitable for fieldwork:  6.5 

Soil moisture supplies:  3% very short, 21% short, 72% adequate and 4% surplus

Field Crops Report

Rainfall was sporadic across the state.  Corn planting increased to 97% complete, and 79% has emerged. 

 

Rice producers had planted 66% of the rice, 11% had emerged.  Aphids appeared on seedling rice.  Sorghum producers had completed 43% of planting. 

 

Soybean producers completed 11% of planting. 

 

Cotton producers had 5% of the crop planted. 

 

Sugarcane producers were busy applying herbicides and cultivating fields.  Winter wheat headed continued to lag far behind the 5-year average, at 29% compared with 74% for the average.

Fruits, Vegetables and Specialty Crops

Vegetable producers harvested greenhouse tomatoes, and fertigated bell pepper and tomato fields.  Strawberry producers continued spraying and harvesting strawberries.  Crawfish production improved.

Cattlemen cut ryegrass to make hay and fertilized pastures.
