A new direct-to-growers seed company – formed from companies in Mississippi and Pennsylvania – is entering the market across a wide swatch of the South, Northeast, Delmarva and the coastal Atlantic region.

The new enterprise, the Local Seed Company, will be headquartered in Memphis. It will offer “a diverse portfolio of competitive, quality products and genetics at the local level,” according to a company announcement.

“The formation of Local Seed Co. is the result of majority investments in Dulaney Seed, based in Clarksdale, Miss., and T.A. Seeds, located in Jersey Shore, Penn,” the release noted. “Local Seed Co. will maintain operations at both locations, with capital improvements and expansions planned in the near future.”

The new company will give growers access to diverse germplasm and trait options in corn, soybean, wheat, rice, cotton and cover crops that will be selected through locally focused R&D.

“The Local Seed Co. direct-to-grower business model is a bit unique in some areas of the country,” stated Charles Michell, the company’s CEO. “The best way to provide our customers the absolute best seed offerings is by locally testing and selecting products that are sold directly to growers. Our seedsmen will understand growers’ fields and management practices with the goal of creating value for all parties. Our mission statement is ‘Quality Crafted with Care’, and we will live by this statement every day.”

“The ag industry is changing every day, and we must keep up with those changes,” said Taylor Doebler, previous owner of T.A. Seeds. “Our customers are our most important investment, and we felt this opportunity with Local Seed Co. was the ideal business decision that will benefit us as a company and our farmer/dealer customers.”

Terry Dulaney with Dulaney Seed, added, “Providing our customers all of the technology benefits of the national industry while having that local, personally-prescribed solution for each customer is what we’re striving for every day, and now we have the additional resources to do that.”

Along with Michell as CEO, other executives include:

  • Chism Craig, who will head up product development and field R&D.
  • Reed Trusty, managing sales and marketing.
  • Bo Rhea, handling recreational seed and wildlife management.
  • Chris McCracken, who will direct cover crop development.
