Texas AgrAbility and the Battleground to Breaking Ground Project of the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will partner with Prairie View A&M Cooperative Extension to host a farm tour and agricultural business workshop Oct. 20-21 in Prairie View.

Both activities are free and are being held at different locations. Coordinators said while the program is oriented to military veterans, beginning farmers and ranchers as well as individuals with disabilities can also benefit from attending.

The farm tour and a networking event will be from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Oct. 20 at VegOut! Farms, 5648 Muske Lane in Pattison. Food and refreshments will be provided by Prairie View A&M Cooperative Extension.

“VegOut! Farms is a 21-acre farm that produces organically and locally grown produce,” said Erin Kimbrough, AgriLife Extension coordinator for family and community health, College Station. “They use hydroponics, aquaponics and traditional soil growing techniques to produce specialty vegetables and herbs.”

On Oct. 21, a Battleground to Breaking Ground workshop will be from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Carden Waller Extension Building, 250 E.M. Norris St. in Prairie View.

“This is an agricultural business workshop for veterans, individuals with disabilities, beginning farmers and ranchers, and anyone else interested in starting an agricultural business,” Kimbrough said.

Workshop sessions will address agriculture business startup, business plan development, options for farming and ranching for those with a disability, financial funding sources for farming, ranching and marketing, and resources to support agriculture business operations. Breakfast and lunch are included courtesy of Prairie View A&M Cooperative Extension.

The Battleground to Breaking Ground program was developed with input from AgriLife Extension, Texas AgrAbility, the U.S. Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service and USDA Farm Service Agency, the National Farmer Veteran Coalition, USDA Risk Management and Texas Department of Agriculture.
